About the job
The Foundation Core UI team is looking for a Sr. Software Developer. This role is about building the bedrock of the user experience while simultaneously defining the future of how users interact with SAS analytics and AI software. We are looking for a Senior Software Developer who thrives at the intersection of front-end craftsmanship and cutting-edge generative AI exploration. In this position, you won't just write code-you will establish the patterns, component libraries, and intelligent workflows that power our entire product ecosystem. You will bridge the gap between robust, highly accessible UI foundations and dynamic, AI-driven user experiences.
As a Sr Software Developer, you will:
- Design and develop high-quality, testable, and scalable software solutions within established timelines while adhering to R&D best practices and processes.
- Actively involve other project stakeholders (e.g., managers, developers, user interface and visual designers, and product managers) to ensure implementation satisfies functional requirements and is consistent with established R&D standards.
- Participate in project scoping and scheduling; track progress on individual tasks and alert stakeholders to issues that are blocking or preventing completion of tasks.
- Ensure quality through functional, unit, and performance testing; work closely with testing teams by providing thorough reviews of test plans and communicating when updates should be made to cover code changes related to enhancements, redesigns, and/or bug fixes.
- Maintain accountability for the entire life cycle of the code, including support for both internal and external consumers.
- Mentor junior engineers or interns through successful project delivery.
- In collaboration with technical writers, author an appropriate level of design and technical documentation that satisfies both internal and external consumers.
- Be encouraged to participate in open-source projects on behalf of SAS.
- Ensure all applicable security policies and processes are followed to support the organization's secure software development goals.
- Embrace curiosity, passion, authenticity and accountability. These are our values and influence everything we do.
Required qualifications

- Minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of delivering enterprise-grade web applications.
- Experience with SAS Viya products and SAS VS Code extensions.
- Expert-level mastery of TypeScript, React, and modern HTML/CSS.
- Deep understanding of application accessibility (a11y) standards, with practical experience implementing complex accessibility features such as custom keyboard tooltips, ARIA compliance, and focus management for keyboard-only users.
- Hands-on experience architecting and launching generative AI-driven applications, including VS Code extensions, LLM-driven insights systems, and AI agents featuring data retrieval and streaming capabilities.
- Solid understanding of back-end and database technologies, including PostgreSQL, Node.js, WebSocket protocol, and relational database management.
- Deep commitment to code quality with extensive experience writing resilient unit and integration tests using Jest.
- Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining highly reusable, enterprise-scale React component libraries from the ground up.
- Strong history of partnering directly with UX designers to align engineering implementations with design systems, ensuring pixel-perfect fidelity.
- Active contributor to high-standard peer code reviews, championing consistent coding patterns, architectural best practices, and team growth.
- Experience optimizing browser runtime performance, such as executing dynamic component sample code in-browser.
- Equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.
