Description
Minimum qualifications:- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience in software development.
- 7 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.
- 5 years of experience with design and architecture; and testing/launching software products.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with identifying, prioritizing, and addressing significant technical debt in mature codebases.
- Expertise in distributed systems, query processing, and C .
- Track record of leading large-scale system design and modernization efforts.
- Understanding of software engineering best practices, including testing, CI/CD, and release management.
- Passion for building high-quality, reliable, and maintainable systems.

BigQuery is a cornerstone of Google Cloud's data analytics offerings, processing exabytes of data for our customers. The Dremel query engine is at the heart of BigQuery.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in modernizing the Dremel codebase. This is a unique opportunity to handle significant technical challenges, drive architectural evolution, and directly improve the reliability, isolation, and engineering velocity for one of Google's most critical services.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $262,000-$365,000 bonus equity benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Responsibilities
- Design and advocate significant refactoring and re-architecture efforts within the Dremel related components to improve modularity, testability, and isolation.
- Identify key areas of technical debt and develop strategies to address them, unblocking future development and reducing system fragility.
- Collaborate with Engineering Productivity and SRE teams to streamline the development, testing, and release processes, enabling faster iteration and higher quality releases.
- Architect solutions that improve fault isolation and reduce the blast radius of failures, ensuring BigQuery rock-solid reliability.
- Work with other executive leads across BigQuery to align on long-term technical direction and ensure Dremel's architecture can support future product needs.
