- 6 years of experience in failure analysis techniques, including the interpretation of X-ray, CT scans, and battery capacity, voltage, and DCIR measurements to interpret battery reliability signals.
- Experience in battery failure modes, mechanisms, and impact from mechanical stresses.
- Experience in battery cell and pack manufacturing and battery installation processes in consumer electronics.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master's or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Reliability Engineering with an emphasis on structural dynamics.
- Experience with mechanical engineering and dynamics, specifically regarding the behavior of soft-goods/battery modules within rigid enclosures.
- Experience influencing global cell/battery suppliers and coordinating testing programs with international vendors.
- Experience leading cross-functional technical projects and managing design changes based on reliability data.
- Experience with hardware testing equipment, including battery cyclers (e.g., Maccor), environmental chambers, and mechanical stress testers (e.g., drop towers). Proficiency in statistical analysis for reliability (e.g., Weibull analysis, acceleration factors).
- Experience with battery reliability testing.
About the job
As a Reliability Engineer, you will play a key role in creating new consumer electronic products that meet a high bar for reliability and performance. You will work closely with the product management and design engineering teams to define standards, specify tests, and then supervise test execution and failure analysis. A broad engineering background and command of statistical methods will help to inform design of new products. Your strong interpersonal and communication skills will be key to ensuring adoption of your technical recommendations.
As a Senior Hardware Reliability Engineer within the Product Integrity Engineering (PIE) team, you will lead the battery reliability strategy for Pixel Phones. You will be responsible for ensuring that battery modules maintain peak performance and safety throughout the product lifecycle by understanding the mechanical interactions between the battery and the system. You will require a blend of mechanical intuition and cross-functional leadership to influence product design, battery engineering, and manufacturing teams. You will drive the long-term reliability roadmap, develop new standards to de-risk emerging technologies, and correlate lab testing with real-world field performance to deliver industry-leading products.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $159,000-$231,000 bonus equity benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of long-term reliability roadmaps for battery systems, ensuring alignment between technology readiness and product launch schedules for Pixel.
- Drive Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to identify and mitigate risks related to mechanical interference, component tolerances, and assembly processes.
- Design and implement mechanical interaction studies, including shock tower testing and dynamics analysis, to characterize battery movement and stress under usage conditions while developing physics-based accelerated lifecycle test (ALT) models.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product Design, Battery Engineers, and Manufacturing teams to influence architectural decisions and hardware accommodations for battery health, and coordinate with suppliers to oversee module-level reliability testing, establishing standards and reviewing global technical data.
- Drive failure analysis using X-ray, Computed Tomography (CT), and other measurement techniques to identify root causes of battery-system failures and implement corrective actions.
